Things That Are Making Me Happy
Because it's the little things that count, isn't it?
1) Freshly-made corn tortillas from Fiesta Mart. I think I finally became a Texan when I switched my allegiance from flour to corn, and I'll never go back. The Fiesta Mart in my S. Austin neighborhood ROCKS--a completely different experience from the scary "Fester Mart" in Central Austin that I stopped shopping at a dozen or so years ago. Immaculately clean, helpful staff, shoppers with well-behaved children, an eye-popping variety of unusual food-stuffs not seen at any of our chi-chi grocery stores, and what other store features a live mariachi band?
2) My new purse. Found at a thrift shop a few weeks ago. Snatched up immediately after it was brought out from the back. Black leather that feels like buttah. Buttah. I sensed it was good quality when I first stroked its soft sides, but didn't recognize the label. I googled it when I got home and discovered that it is usually sold through high-end department stores (Marni?) and probably cost $200 new. I got it for $15 and it is pristine. I like it so much that I have a little crush on it.
3) The way Her Majesty pronounces the "sw" sound as "schw." As in, "Can we go schwimming?" And, "Where's my schweater?" And, best of all, "Mama! Let's go schwing!" Which always makes me think of Wayne and Garth.
4) The handwriting of a 10-year-old on my grocery list asking for "Rits Crackers."
5) EMusic. Home to dozens of free downloads each month via my favorite kind of source, the record label sampler. Malcontent Mama invited me to join, earning me (and her!) 50 free downloads, and if anyone is interested in joining, I'd be delighted to make you the same deal. Coupled with ITunes, I feel more connected to what's going on in music than I have in years.
6) Phone dates with Gatling Gun. About once every 2 months or so, GG and I have a marathan phone session that--except for the fact that we are divided by 2 states--resembles a night out on the back porch with one of your BFFs. We both knock back a few, have a few smokes, visit the bathroom a few times when the seal breaks (not interrupting our conversation, which is the sign of true friendship), laugh, cry, and remind each other of high school adventures that the other had forgotten or successfully repressed. As a matter of fact, we have one scheduled for tonight. Time for me to get the children in bed, and make a call.

Regarding number three: It reminds me of you when you are drunk and calling everyone "Schweetie". I so miss (and love) that.
Tell Gatling Gun hi. Wish I could join you on a teleconference! Though to be honest I've never been much of a phone person. Not sure why.
Oh and the Marni bag? Uh, try closer to 1000usd new. On Net A Porter they sell for 800 GBP. You, my dear, have SCORED.

But then you also have a Prada that you got at a thrift store as well. I really need to go with you some time.

Glad you're feeling better. I did the meme, btw. Come on over and name some films.

It is definitely the next best thing to being there, although it would have been even MORE fun if we could have cranked up the deep fryer at 2 am and fixed up some exican megrolls!
Now upload a photo of that purse! I must see it!!
Hello Karla!

Mr. Pod, I think I love you.
ANd that is precisely the sort of comment my Mr. Man would make.
Which explains why I love him.
