BLAH blah blah blah

I put off the starter until next weekend. It involves yeast, with which I am unfamiliar, and a little bit nervous about, and the recipe is all like, keep stirring the starter down for 24 hours and make sure to put some newspaper down if it overflows, and keep in in a warm place for 3-4 days, and I didn't get all the ingredients together until late Sunday afternoon and didn't relish the thought of icky goo taking over my kitchen overnight or while I'm at work, and did I mention I don't like messes?

So, come this Saturday, we're on.

In other news, it's time for my most recent library finds:

Home Girl: Building a Dream House on a Lawless Block, by Judith Matloff. About an American journalist ex-pat who moves to West Harlem with her Dutch husband and refurbishes a house in a gentrifying neighborhood. Of note, as I picked up this book to read it tonight, a bookmark from Recycled Books in DENTON FUCKING TEXAS fell out. Where my husband is from. Where his band is named after. How random is that?

The Butt, by Will Self. About a guy trying to quit smoking. It's Will Self, it must be funny. After all, he's the "the British master of the satirical fantasy." According to reviews.

City of Refuge, by Tom Piazza. A post-Katrina New Orleans novel. Piazza also wrote Why New Orleans Matters.

Wrong Guys: Murder, False Confessions, and the Norfolk Four, by Tom Well and Richard A. Leo. Because I like a true crime novel every once in a while. Good reviews.

Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High, by Kerry Patterson et al. Ummm, this one is for work.

The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes and Why, by Amanda Ripley. Come on, you're not interested in this?

Backstabbing for Beginners: My Crash Course in International Diplomacy
, by Michael Soussan. Dude works for the UN--intrigue and absurdity follows.

In Search of Bill Clinton, by John D. Gartner. Psychological insight into a President--possibly interesting.

Drink: A Cultural History of Alcohol, by Iain Gately. Couldn't pass this title up.

Can I recommend? If you are not a regular library visitor, consider getting a library card. It's all free books! For free! You don't have to buy them first! And if you don't like the book you checked out, just return it! You didn't pay for it--you just get another one that grabs your attention. They are ALL FREE.

Peace out.

  • Not free if you live outside the city limits, yo. It costs us something like $45 per year for our family card at the Round Rock PL. Which I guess is fair since we don't pay city taxes or whatever, but STILL. I can buy 45 $1 books off the clearance rack at Half Price and SELL them back!

    Just sayin'.

Er, anyway, good call on the starter. From what I remember, it foams up like a bitch when it's just getting going.

  • Can I come over and help make the starter? We could turn it into a chick thing...

  • I LOVE the library. I live in one town and work in another. The town where I live has a library that is open from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday. In other words, it's open only when I'm not there. Sucks.

Thankfully, I pay an annual fee - worth every penny - for a library card in the town where I work.

  • Wow...that's a lotta books!
I had not been to the library in months and started going again in December. It is one busy place these days(books, mags, music , DVD for free!)and our local library has a huge Pez dispenser collection, too.

  • I must second the library. I've pretty much stopped buying books. Also, you can go online and look up a book, place a hold and they'll send you an email when they have it and you just go in and pick it up. It kind of rocks. I always have about 10 titles on my list (I think that's the max you can reserve) and it's like Netflix for books.

  • I started decluttering the house this weekend, and I spent HOURS trying to find more places to put up books. I think my book addiction is getting out of control. A library card sounds like a perfect solution, and the boys need to some quality library time, too.

  • Since I have commitment issues, I have decided to try a new reading technique. I am reading what started off as 7 books, but I finally finished one, so now 6 books. I read one chapter of each and then swap. It's working out well for me.

BTW, THANKS for the new cd's! THey were here when I got back in town. What a nice surprise! Our wireless has been down for a bit and I have been sans internet for over a week. I don't recommend it!

  • Okay, I have to amend my earlier comment. Someone told me cards at the APL are FREE for anyone living in TEXAS, regardless of city limit boundaries, and that appears to be true, which is AWESOME. The nearest branch to me is 20 minutes away (vs. 5 minutes for the RRPL) but I'ma get me a card, yo.
